A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
