A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been seized.

One account, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a modest bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

But the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a transaction based on non-public details," said a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other individuals also earned large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule presented on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Market Background

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

The industry faced scrutiny under the previous administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
