California is Completely Drought-Free for the First Time in a Quarter Century.
For the first time in 25 years, no portion of the state is experiencing dryness. This significant achievement comes on the heels of difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated blaze threats and challenged its enormous farming industry.
An Update Reveals Zero Abnormally Dry Areas
The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program illustrated that the entire state is free from any level of drought. This change resulted from multiple significant storms that helped fill key lakes like Oroville and Shasta well above their historic averages.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a climate scientist.
From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays
Achieving this status involved severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, causing extensive inundation, power outages, and fatalities. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.
As late as late December, areas like northeastern California were still classified as unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.
The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average
However, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions is not the same as complete water security. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is only about 70% of the typical level.
This frozen reservoir, which provides about a third of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for future water availability. Water officials have emphasized that it is too early to make predictions for the coming year.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” explained a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”
Although the monitor indicates no dryness, the next challenge is to maintaining this positive water situation for the coming seasons.
