Cameron Norrie secured the biggest victory of his professional journey by rebounding from a early deficit to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two separate matches, this triumph signifies Norrie's maiden win over a current world number one.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who becomes the fifth English competitor in the record books to defeat a global number one. "Returning from health issues last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualifiers here. I just aimed to appreciate my performance in the latter part of the year. To secure a win like this, it's the greatest victory of my professional life, my initial victory over the global number one and probably the most confident player in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also ended Alcaraz's supreme run of nine finals in a row and 17 successive elite tournament victories, which represented the top run of performances in the young champion's early career.

The top seed looked to be advancing smoothly to a win early on as he cruised through the first set.
