McLaren's Lando Norris Wins First F1 World Title in Yas Marina Despite Verstappen's Grand Prix Win.

In a display of gutsy driving, the McLaren driver has sealed his first Formula One world championship by securing P3 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. A podium was enough for the British driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the victory and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished in second.

He delivered exactly what was required in an extremely high-pressure battle at the Abu Dhabi track, including a series of audacious passing maneuvers, with flawless work from both himself and his McLaren squad.

A Momentous Accomplishment for Britain and McLaren

In taking his maiden world championship, Norris is now the eleventh driver from Britain to do so. It also brings to an end McLaren's title drought, which went back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton last won it. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren last secured the championship double back in 1998.

This marks a stunning turnaround for the Woking-based outfit, from a nadir in the middle of the last decade when they ended up ninth in the constructors’ championship. The comeback has been spearheaded by team principal Zak Brown and, most recently, by Andrea Stella, who has built an well-drilled team with a very fast car.

The Story of the McLaren

For the Australian Oscar Piastri, who had looked so strong for much of the season, there was obvious disappointment at stumbling in the final third. Several of difficult weekends and some errors, including crashing out in Baku, proved costly. However, he finishes the season having shown he is too of champion caliber. To have been so fast in only his third season in F1, with seven wins, remains very impressive.

Max Verstappen was also brilliant to take the fight down to the last race. The Dutchman did everything possible in Abu Dhabi with the win, but having come back from a 104-point deficit mid-season, he fell just short of having the points to overhaul Norris, ending up just two points behind.

Sealing the Deal with Clinical Precision

He secured his success with ruthless focus to win the crown that had been so close but eluded him as McLaren found themselves floundering at the last two races. These included a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an egregious tactical decision in Qatar.

It was a significant achievement for the 26-year-old in his seventh year in F1, all of them with McLaren. He stuck with the team even during some difficult periods, believing they would come good. That belief was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.

Norris performed a remarkable job to stick at his goal, keeping his composure and confidence during periods under pressure. After losing the championship lead to Piastri earlier, he nonetheless worked at getting the most from the car's potential.

The Title-Deciding Race

In the race, Verstappen kept his first place through turn one, but the three title leaders kept it clean. Piastri, using the hard tyre, was feisty and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to take second place.

It showed the McLarens were free to race, but left Norris under pressure from the Charles Leclerc. The first round pit visits saw Norris come out into traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and displayed no signs of nerves in his race craft.

On lap 19, he made an incredibly bold move to overtake two cars at once, moving up to fourth and catching Verstappen's teammate. The rival team told their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a breathtaking assault where Norris went up the inside line, nearly leaving the track.

This moment was investigated by the race officials, with several nerve-wracking laps elapsing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris was decided. This decisive charge without being held up was crucial to his title fight.

Diverging Fates

While Norris was crowned the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in fortunes between the two was pronounced. While the new generation battled over the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal conclusion to a dismal season with Ferrari.

Making his debut with the Scuderia had been greeted with enthusiasm but has yielded what was easily his worst season ever, ending up sixth in the championship without a top-three finish. He has appeared jaded in the final rounds and will look to rebuild over the winter.
