The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has stepped down as the chief federal prosecutor in the state. This comes after a court battle that questioned her legal standing to hold the office.

Attorney General's Statement

The nation's top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, accepted Habba's resignation on the start of the week. In a statement that the judicial decision made it unworkable for Habba to lead the department effectively.

"Do not interpret adherence to the ruling as defeat," she declared. "My fight will now stretch across the country."

Judicial Challenge

The departure follows closely on a judicial panel determined that she had been acting without proper authority as US attorney. This judgment is likely to affect numerous criminal cases in the state.

The judicial panel ruled that a temporary posting that did not receive confirmation by the US Senate breached the statute on vacant positions.

Future Role and Reaction

Bondi said that she will stay on at the Department of Justice as a high-level advisor. She will pursue additional appeals of the ruling, aiming for a different outcome.

Writing online, the Attorney General contended that the judiciary "must not second-guess the President's choice of attorneys responsible for executing the primary duty of the administration of criminal prosecution."

She highlighted her tenure and said that under her leadership, the state capital of Newark saw a 20% reduction in offenses. It was also reported that the Camden had its first summer in 50 years free from homicides.

Legal Career

Habba, was initially recruited to Trump's personal legal team in recent years. Subsequently, she represented her client in his business records case in 2024, when he was conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records.

Before Habba took on the top New Jersey post, Donald Trump had announced he was appointing her as his senior adviser in a potential future term, describing Habba as "unwavering in her loyalty" and a "tireless advocate for justice".
