Meteorologists are reporting an icy commencement to the new year, with snowfall expected over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Warnings

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. Readings are expected to be cold, making extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• The public have been urged to allow extra time for travel on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Advisories Activated

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this meant the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is utterly key.
