The former Brazilian president taken into custody after being deemed a escape threat
Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.
This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of his move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, causing him to enact a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.
The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
