The megacity Awakens to Dangerous Haze Post Celebrations
Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" level.
Alarming Pollution Measurements
Several parts of the capital recorded an AQI above 500, which translates to 10x the healthy level recommended by the WHO.
Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, amounting to 15 to 20 times above safe limits.
Fireworks Ban and Current Changes
Since 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly pollution that covers the metropolis as colder weather sets in.
However in recent months, the newly elected city government petitioned the highest court to propose a modification of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – previously criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and public health".
Judicial Decision and Reality
To the disappointment of public health and environmental advocates, judges approved the proposal, specifying that green firecrackers could be ignited during specific periods throughout the festival.
During the celebrations, there was extensive disregard of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city recorded air quality spiking around midnight to extremely hazardous levels seen during Diwali in at least recent memory.
International Implications
The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also triggered a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab pointing to worsening atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from across the border following the celebrations.
Long-Standing Pollution Problem
The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the capital have continued as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
During the festival period, the levels of hazardous particles in the environment has been documented to shoot up to seventy percent above the worst records ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once viewed as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.
Multiple Contamination Factors
The situation in the capital is attributed to a convergence of various sources including transportation pollution, dust, building projects, garbage fires and pollutants from farm burning in nearby regions of Punjab and Haryana.
Throughout these areas, rural residents illegally ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air arrives.
Health and Financial Consequences
Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple investigations.
These hazardous conditions results in high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung conditions, and can even lead to cancer.
Air quality crisis is estimated to be responsible for 10,000 premature mortalities per year in the capital.
