Following the demise of the celebrated actress at 79 years old, the acclaimed director has shared a detailed tribute honoring her career and their profound relationship.
Remembering a Extraordinary Friendship
In a newly released article, Allen, 89, described their shared experiences from their initial meeting in 1969 during rehearsals for his play Play It Again, Sam, across their five-year romance and the multiple projects they made side by side.
“Over the years, I created films for an sole critic, Diane Keaton,” Allen wrote. “I avoided reading a single review of my work and was concerned exclusively with what Keaton had to say about it.”
He further noted that she was “unique among people the world has seen or is not expected to ever see again,” and that “her face and laugh lit up any environment she walked into.”
Surprising Death and Enduring Memories
Keaton died after becoming unwell at her home in Los Angeles. The actor had been away from the spotlight for a period of time, and a source close to her shared that although no specific condition had been disclosed, her well-being deteriorated swiftly, with several of her intimate companions in the dark that she was suffering.
Her demise nonetheless appeared to be a surprise even to her inner circle.
“Just recently, the world was a place that featured Keaton,” writes Allen. “Now it’s a world that lacks her. Therefore, it’s a darker world. Still, there are her films. And her great laugh still lingers in my head.”
Steadfast Allegiance Amid Challenges
The actress stood as a loyal defender of the filmmaker after the resurfacing of a accusation made in 1992 made against him by Dylan Farrow throughout a custody battle.
The accusation was thoroughly examined and then dropped by two official bodies, and no indictments were pursued.
“Woody Allen is my friend and I still trust him,” Keaton commented of the allegation when it resurfaced as part of the activist wave. “It may be worthwhile to take a look at the 60 Minutes interview from 1992 and see what you think.”
Enduring Influence
In his 2020 memoir, the writer referred to Keaton as his “north star”; the individual whose opinion means the most.
Reflecting in the previous year, Keaton said: “He was so remarkable. It always was really special to be with him. He was wonderful. He was the whole package, and he still is [so] to me. He gave me everything. He really did. Allen created a free atmosphere. That was a huge help.”
Private Experiences
The piece features anecdotes of their shared moments away from filming, including a unforgettable Thanksgiving playing poker with her family, and notes of their connection: “We had a many memorable personal years together and finally we both parted paths, and why we parted only higher powers and psychology might be able to determine.”
In that year, Allen set aside his reluctance to attend events to honor her with the AFI life achievement award, stating: “The instant I met her, she was a tremendous influence to me. A great deal of what I’ve done in my life I attribute, for sure, to her. Seeing life through her eyes. She undoubtedly is extraordinary. This is a woman who is great at each thing she does.”
