When Swimmers Ran From Danger, Widely-Shared Photo Depicts Beach Patrol Running ‘Full Speed’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her personal space. On a recent weekend evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, noticed loud noises reverberating across the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. She left her home, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore told her something was wrong.

While standing on the avenue, conversing with a duo who had hurried up the hill in their swimwear, she became aware of someone moving up from behind. It was a beach patrol officer, sprinting towards Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the path that everyone was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and without footwear … He moved into something that surely every instinct would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Without a second thought, but just completely maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Bravery Amidst Tragedy

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous instances of valour in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, officers and ambulance crews caring for dozens of the injured.

Local Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s account was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the beach facility beside the scene of the incident transforming into a impromptu medical station. It was shared that other team members were also seen taking action, for instance rushing into the surf to assist people needing help.

In the days after the tragedy, comments of gratitude flooded in. An online statement expressed thanks for the lifeguards who exhibited that “goodness will always overcome darkness”.

The squad of beach patrol published a message, saying they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your kind sentiments and support. We are touched by the care for our responders,” the organization stated. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those impacted.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional beach safety officers, stated that the crew acted heroically from the moment the shooting started right into late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many emotional accounts, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is incredible,” commented a mayor.

“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in keeping our iconic coastlines protected for the public, but what we observed on that day should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and grapple with the atrocity of this heinous act of violence, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much good we have observed in the presence of such hatred.”
